Two Nights in Music City: Faith, Princess Rebecca, and the Dove Awards

Two nights. Two incredible nights in the epicenter of Contemporary Christian Music: The Dove Awards at the historic Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. I flew out of Houston to Music City two consecutive years as a Methodist Hospital warrior of truth, on a mission to seek out my potential wife and celebrate the Master with the industry's most talented and accomplished.

Here is "Lion," a favorite from that time period and the song that garnered Princess Rebecca St. James a Dove Award—the highest earthly honor in Christian music—for her work with *The Chronicles of Narnia* movie project. She was always my favorite, and my future wife, in those early days. I am so proud to have spent time with the CCM community there in Nashville. What a fantastic walk of faith, and a great time every year.

Reflecting on the Charm of BarlowGirl and "Never Alone"

The beautiful sisters of BarlowGirl opened for Princess Rebecca that evening in League City, Texas. I later saw them again at a big KSBJ show in Eleanor Tinsley Park downtown. BarlowGirl was a massive fixture in the mid-2000s Christian rock and alternative scene, with hits like "Never Alone" dominating Christian radio from 2004–2006.

I posted a press release on my "John Is Waiting For His Princess" blog offering to fly to meet the girls in their hometown of Chicago for coffee. For a while, Ms. Alyssa was the apple of my eye. Who knows, maybe a cup of coffee somewhere is still in our future, ladies. Wishing all three of you the very best.

Here's an acoustic version of "Never Alone" that aired back then on Air1 Radio, which broadcasts on hundreds of faith-based stations nationwide.

The Soundtrack of The Search: Finding Inspiration in Britt Nicole's Early Music

Those early days of serving the Master and looking for my wife were so much fun. I launched my blog, entitled "John is Waiting for His Princess," in 2005 after attending a presentation on blogging by a Houston Chronicle technology reporter in the Texas Medical Center.

I used the site to document occasional recreational and work experiences, share my thoughts on various topics and spiritual matters, and highlight my love for my future wife. So who was John waiting for? I was encouraged to discover the work of CCM artist Britt Nicole back then, who seemed to suggest she might know.

Where Are We Going, Angel? Reflecting on the Ethereal Heights of Andy Hunter's Most Memorable Track

As we kick off the Lord Week here, let's feature one of my favorite tracks from British DJ Andy Hunter. I think vocalist Christine Glass perfectly illustrates the excitement of the Princess as we soar above the clouds to anywhere she desires. Where are we going, angel?

The Origin of These Amazing Videos: How One Record From Princess Rebecca St. James Changed Everything

Are you ready for the Lord Week, where we examine the origins of all these incredible videos I post on the blog? I believe this all started with one album, Rebecca St. James 2005 masterpiece "If I Had One Chance to Tell You Something." Listen carefully to that record, with headphones! Ms. Rebecca is a lovely, thankful person recording the first real Princess record, starting a tradition enjoyed and emulated by artists around the globe. I was proudly serving with the great Rev. Charles Millikan at Houston's Methodist Hospital when this life-changing album dropped.

When you get to the track "Thank You" on the record listen very carefully. You need headphones. I was stunned. And thrilled.

Shorlty thereafter, I saw Princess Rebecca perform live in support of this album in League City, Texas. Intrigued? Stay tuned for more...

Maybe Australia's Acclaimed Julia Stone Can Explain It Emphatically. You're The One That I Want, Sweetheart

I think sometimes folks get confused. Who is he talking about here? Who is this person he constantly refers to on this blog?

Answer: The most incedible woman in the world. My future wife.

Julia Stone's haunting, stripped-down cover of the classic Grease track "You're the One That I Want" transforms the traditionally upbeat duet into a whisper-soft, melancholic acoustic ballad.

You name the time and place, angel. I'll meet you there.

It's Hurricane Season, Houston. The Princess Rolled Through Downtown This Year. Are You Ready For What Comes Next?

She's a real sweetie. She captured my heart the very first time I looked at her in that Houston night spot. You can imagine my excitement when she rolled through downtown earlier this year with Cannons. When she comes around, things change. Rearrange.

And my incredible Princess is coming back like a hurricane, friends and neighbors. As the old song says, "I've got joy, joy, joy in my heart, heart, heart." Or something like that.

She's probably intrigued by my previous adventures to Berlin, Rome, London, and Perth. But she has additional plans. Where? Away. Away. Away.

I love you, angel. Can't wait to see you again.

Germany's Palebloom Starts Us Off After A Legendary Visit. What Do You Think I Deserve After All This Warfare, My Love?

The world has a voice...and a strong opinion. You're better off than you think you are, sweetheart. And just as airplanes fly across the globe both to and fro, the internet helps us get the word out to others who might never see our thought of victory. My trip to Germany, wrapped up last week, was an incredible success.

Keep yelling and screaming, my German angels. I deeply appreciate your creative work, and your contribution to our love. I can't wait to post your amazing work here in the future.

See you soon, gorgeous.

From Friedrichshain to Alexanderplatz: My Berlin Wrap-Up

I'm writing this post in a coffee shop in Alexanderplatz, with the World Clock over my right shoulder and the famed Berlin TV Tower standing close by. It's Saturday afternoon here, so I'm surrounded by people in a packed plaza. Tourists? Berliners? It's hard to tell, but I'd venture to guess both.

Today wraps up my visit here, with a flight to London later tonight, followed by a long layover there. On my Rome trip, I spent the night at de Gaulle heading back to Texas. Tonight I spend the night at Heathrow.

My second day brought me to the East Side Gallery. Like my hotel walls, the former Berlin Wall has paintings on it. The East Side Gallery is the longest surviving stretch of the Berlin Wall, transformed in 1990 into an open-air memorial covered in murals that celebrate the fall of the Cold War division and symbolize global hope for peace and freedom.

An outdoor art gallery stretching just under a mile long, featuring the paintings of 118 artists from 21 countries, it's a great afternoon walk particularly when the weather is as good as it has been here. I definitely picked the right time of year to visit in terms of climate and temperature.

Just over the river from the gallery is the quirky, incomparable Friedrichshain, a historically working-class district in former East Berlin that evolved from a hub of alternative counterculture into one of the city's most vibrant, creative, and dynamic urban centers. One of the "coolest" neighborhoods I've ever experienced, Friedrichshain is a must-visit for tourists. In my younger years, I probably would have spent day and night in the place, as my initial impression is that the neighborhood gets somewhat lively after dark. I walked the streets, enjoying the culture, wondering what it's like for people who live and work here.

In the States, the signs at 7-Eleven and Circle K read "Consumption of Alcohol on The Premises Is Strictly Forbidden." Here the convenience stores (called Spätis) set up picnic tables outside and let people sit there drinking beer and wine as long as they want. All along the cobblestone streets, residents and visitors alike sit outside and hang out, socialize, drink, eat, etc. Eateries featuring food from around the globe line the streets, including one that advertised TEX MEX. I was tempted to see what German Mexican food tastes like.

Last night, I attended Berlin's annual Pop-Kultur Festival, which this year brought together more than 50 artists and projects, featuring German acts alongside a wide variety of international artists from across Europe, North America, and elsewhere. The Kulturbrauerei complex is a sprawling 19th-century former brewery estate that has been transformed into a vibrant cultural hub housing theaters, clubs, cinemas, and music venues. I had a great time listening to live music and experiencing the surrounding neighborhood of Prenzlauer Berg, a densely populated and historically rich area famed for its well-preserved Altbau architecture, tree-lined streets, and lively café culture. I sat with locals for an hour or more in an open-air eatery and watering hole along the street before the show, people-watching and enjoying German refreshments.

Berlin proved to be a city of incredibly friendly, welcoming, and easygoing people. A pleasure to be around. Danke.

Through the Glass Dome and Past the Brandenburg Gate: Berlin Day 1

The journey was long and included a small disaster — me accidentally leaving my cell phone on a chair at Heathrow before boarding a connecting flight — but I am now resting comfortably in my hotel room in Berlin, Germany.

I actually find my hotel quite appealing. Modern art hangs both on the walls in frames and is painted directly on the walls along the hallways, unlike anything I've ever seen anywhere else in a hotel. My room is adorned with numerous framed photographs of Berlin streets, parks, and buildings, as well as a personal, framed, handwritten welcome letter from a former Vancouver resident named Andrea, who moved to Berlin in 2012 and details her favorite places around the city to visit. Again, very unique. The building glows green at night. The word that comes to mind is "elegant."

Having spent a couple of days exploring the city, I thought you might want to hear about several of my visits on Day 1.

My first Berlin experience was the Reichstag Building. As the historic meeting place of Germany's parliament, it stands as a powerful symbol of the nation's turbulent political history—from the German Empire through its 1933 fire and destruction in WWII—culminating in its modern incarnation featuring Norman Foster's glass dome, which represents transparency and reunited democracy. The dome spirals upward to the top, offering a great view of the city from all directions, with a myriad of history lessons on the historic building before you walk up.

Here's where I first learned that when you need assistance navigating the city, you can often find friendly folks who will guide your way, sometimes in English. There is something quite exhilarating about finding someone who speaks your native tongue when you need directions. And there are more people in Berlin who are at least somewhat familiar with English than I expected. Danke.

The information worker at the Reichstag directed me along the beautiful, wooded path to my next stop: The Brandenburg Gate. Originally built as a neoclassical city gate and triumphal arch, it witnessed the rise of Prussia, Nazi torchlight parades, and the harrowing division of the Cold War before ultimately becoming the ultimate global symbol of German reunification and freedom.

I gazed up at the Quadriga's goddess of peace (misappropriated by Napoleon and taken to France, but later returned to the Germans in 1814) and walked under the magnificent, towering columns. I thought about getting a coffee at the Starbucks across the street but held off. This fantastic monument still stands, as it has for more than 230 years, now among hotels, Starbucks, restaurants, and a throng of tourists from around the globe.

Several blocks over was a much more somber stop for me, once again showing this is a town that doesn't seem to shy away from the fact that not all of its history is pleasant. This stark, undulating field of 2,711 concrete stelae serves as Germany's central, solemn national monument acknowledging and remembering the horrific atrocities of the Holocaust.

I saw groups of people, a number of them school-aged, sitting on or walking among the sculptures, getting lost in the paths between the concrete.

Later in the afternoon, I did pick up that Starbucks coffee (black, grande) and took a long walk down Friedrichstraße, one of Berlin's major historic thoroughfares, meandering through the beautiful, surprising Gendarmenmarkt along the way. Then, onward to Checkpoint Charlie. This famous Cold War crossing point between the American and Soviet sectors serves as a poignant reminder of a divided Berlin, symbolizing the tense standoff between East and West during the height of the ideological conflict.

Then there's that photograph of an American soldier, Jeff Harper, which stands above the checkpoint to this day. Harper probably joined the military thinking he would serve his country, play his tuba in the Army band, and mix in inconspicuously with the millions of others who proudly wore the uniform at that time. He had no idea his face was immortalized over one of the world's most famous former border crossings until a friend mailed him a postcard in 1998.

Bumping Shoulders With Destiny. Moscow's Omnimar Captures That Moment, My Love. We'll Never Be Apart Here

The love we share is not limited by borders or continents. The feeling we experienced while looking into each other's eyes won't dissipate with time.

I hope you're happy and fulfilled in your life, even after the nights we first encountered one another so long ago. As Russia's Omnimar joins a growing chorus of artists celebrating our love, I am declaring that we will never truly be apart here, sweetheart.

We may have bumped shoulders and moved on, but I never forgot you. I love you too, angel. Always.

Iconic Sister Act: Kylie and Dannii Minogue Take Over Australian Television with 100 Degrees

Do these international trips really have an impact? Tonight, we remember an excursion that changed my perspective on traveling across the mighty oceans. I’m reflecting on a trip to Perth, Australia, and a visit that those of you who follow me are likely very familiar with by now. If you aren't, take a few moments to listen to the podcast.

Here's a stunning performance from Kylie Minogue—Australia's highest-selling female artist of all time—on national television down under, performing alongside her gorgeous superstar sister, Dannii.

My exploits have apparently become legendary. They're ready for a victory party with dancers and confetti. How are we doing on that endeavor here in the United States, my friends? Let's plan on an even more exciting post in the near future... if that's even possible.

Are you ready for what comes next? The Berlin flight is in less than two weeks. Stay tuned to the blog for updates.

How Girls' Generation and Asia Redefined the Princess Pop Landscape

It's absolutely amazing to see the international impact of what the Gospel Girls and Disney chicks started here in the United States. Their talents and commitment helped catapult our love efforts to the other side of the globe in stunning fashion.

Enter Girls' Generation, the first group of this type that caught my attention years ago. Girls' Generation is a legendary South Korean girl group that defined the second generation of K-pop. Over their remarkable career, they achieved unprecedented global and domestic success, selling millions of albums, headlining multiple sold-out world tours, and earning hundreds of prestigious awards—cementing their historic legacy as the enduring "Nation's Girl Group."

What you have been watching up to this point on the blog from the Far East all started (as far as I can tell) with the group of lovely young women in our video tonight. In a sense, they started the mighty flow that eventually broke the dam. Since then, Asia has clearly become an immeasurable contributor to the Princess search. I'm so proud of all these young women.

A Torrent of Talent: South Korea's ILLIT Stuns Global Audiences With the Release of "It's Me"

I've featured the incredible Princess artistry that has been taking shape in Asia here for years, but I think it's safe to say the dam has finally broken. The mighty rushing stream has now become a torrent of love. When gorgeous Asian performers, time and time again, showcase their unique talents through song and dance, we must take some time to honor them and enjoy the stunning growth we've experienced in that part of the planet.

I had a great time living in Asia, once spending a year in Okinawa.

To the beautiful young women of the region who have seemingly embraced this concept and decided to help make this a global phenomenon, you have my sincerest thanks and adoration. To me, you are heroic. I look forward to your future work and the massive growth of your music around the world.

After One Unforgettable Evening In Corpus Christi, Princess Lacey and Flyleaf Gave Us "Again"

Someone told me years ago that a band of born-again rock musicians had covered a Nine Inch Nails song from Pretty Hate Machine. Obviously thinking that sounded like a complete disaster, I looked them up and gave the album a listen.

I found the exact opposite to be true.

I was excited by the care they gave to the classic song, and particularly by the amazing performance of the lead vocalist, now a rock star, author and most importantly, a fantastic mommy and wife. My dream.

I later traveled 200 miles to see this band and its incredible singer, who later became known as Princess Lacey, perform live in a venue under the bridge in Corpus Christi. This was shortly after the destruction caused by Hurricane Ike here in Houston.

The band's next record, Memento Mori, featured the song and video we watch tonight.

Here is Princess Lacey and Flyleaf with "Again."

I hear Lacey and the band is wandering through downtown Houston in the next couple weeks.

She's one of the earliest, coming from the era of the original "John is Waiting for His Princess" blog. I guess, in a sense, it's our 20th anniversary, my love...
